If you are looking for a movie that is full, September 2019 may not be the expected period. And, looking at the films released that really satisfy me, the numbers are also very little counted, fortunately still have time to watch old releases via other media, hehe. Where's that? Come see below
1. Ad Astra
(2019 - 20th Century Fox)
dir. James Gray
Cast: Brad Pitt, Tommy Lee Jones, Donald Sutherland, Liv Tyler, Ruth Negga
The first striking thing that made me very impressive was a picture of a "rather close" future world. The film is sci-fi, science fiction, but some aspects of the picture don't go too far - people on spaceships are still hovering due to zero gravity, and the design of objects and buildings is less sleek, but the presentation on the screen is very cool and convincing. I feel all of that was built so that the audience is not too dazzled by the dream of sophistication of the future, and immediately entered the second strike: the plot is small-scale, even tends to be inner, but the stakes are large. A space soldier looks for his father, who has been gone for years and then disappears on an exploratory mission around the planet Neptune, and is allegedly linked to a devastating wave of destruction that is sweeping the earth. This is a film about saving the world, that's right, but at the same time exploring the relationship of a child with his father, a researcher who has been admired by many people on earth, who has been absent for so long. In the midst of the complexity of its world-building, peppered with conspiracy intrigues, a dash of social commentary and a pinch of moral examination - and there are still actions and thrillers, this film also seems to be able to put forward the emotional side of its character - although still in the mode of "astronauts must always be always calm "- led by Brad Pitt's special acting. And, all that can be presented in one go in the right duration.
My score: 8/10
2. The Beguiled
(2017 - Focus Features/Universal)
dir. Sofia Coppola
Cast: Nicole Kidman, Colin Firth, Kirsten Dunst, Elle Fanning, Oona Laurence, Angourie Rice, Addison Riecke, Emma Howard
Based on novels that are often cited in the gothic category (like I understand aje hihihi), the story takes place in a women's hostel isolated by the United States civil war in the 19th century. The survival of the hostel is disturbed when a man who is a soldier from the opposing camp is found injured and they decide to take care of him. The decision was not only dangerous in the middle of the war, but also for the peace of the hostel, because the soldier apparently managed to fascinate the students, teachers, and the principal there. Initially like a soft drama that developed into intrigue romance, this film then turned into the realm of suspense as the choices and desires pursued by each character. To be sure, without having to accentuate sexuality or suddenly turn into a horror film, this film succeeded in maintaining the atmosphere that was about to be generated, and neatly explained the motivation of characters who were not black and white.
My score: 7,5/10
3. Twivortiare
(2019 - MD Pictures)
dir. Benni Setiawan
Cast: Reza Rahadian, Raihaanun, Arifin Putra, Denny Sumargo, Anggika Bolsterli, Boris Bokir, Dimas Aditya, Ferry Salim, Citra Kirana, Lydia Kandou, Dwi Yan, Roy Marten, Aida Nurmala, Ingrid Widjanarko
Jakarta's urban household dramas are usually subscribed to the primetime soap opera story base on national television in the 1990s and early 2000s, but this film wants to try to dig deeper, and be more focused. A young couple with their brilliant careers decided to divorce, but various efforts and situations actually made them re-establish a relationship. For me, the main strength of this film is in the process at each stage of their relationship which is shown in the scenes, through various arguments they throw each other, and moreover thanks to the plenary and natural appearance of the two actors, all synergize to create a convincing impression, cannot just directed which party is right or wrong. Although overall the visual presentation is not that impressive, but seeing the dynamics of this young couple quarreling and making out and fighting again is really interesting.
My score: 7,5/10
