Before we discuss top box office movies, I want to give you special shoutouts for 5 other films that have given me an interesting impression throughout 2019.
Aladdin, dir. Guy Ritchie
unlike what we witnessed in the re-scenes of the very legendary Disney musical animation, this film provided a cheat on a theme supplement that was relevant to today's modern world, extraordinarily bombastic with Naomi Scott's celestial aura.
Alita: Battle Angel, dir. Robert Rodriguez
not only visual effects / CGI that spoil the eyes, excitement of this film never disappears with the duration of every minute, even though many events must be told with a limited duration.
Glass, dir. M. Night Shyamalan
The unique strengths in the film Unbreakable It is not so magnificent scale, but the scene with a mystery wrapping in the thriller actually brings up the "playful" side, making the hypnotized witness sit there resignedly enjoying whatever is presented.
The Mule, dir. Clint Eastwood
Minimalist film with the power of various emotions on each actor.
MY TOP MOVIES OF 2019
10. Knives Out
dir. Rian Johnson
The mystery story is wrapped with a detective storyline that is served in an agile and humorous way. The audience will not be trapped by old-fashioned and repetitive impressions, this film is made by presenting various relevant and very interesting modern touches, starting from the character designs of the players who look eccentric to the dialogues in humorous stories.
9. Weathering With You
dir. Makoto Shinkai
Not only good at drawing, Shinkai proves his ability to create a story line with a layered theme, but with the narration in the story told to make it comfortable and happy, will lead us to drift into his emotions, and at the same time also be able to make us reflect. We are sometimes surprised How come the thought of making a story about a "rain handler" was developed into a modern and contemporary teenage romance story, not just a mystical issue.
6. Avengers: Endgame
dir. Anthony Russo, Joe Russo
The film event of the year that made Stephanie Poetri's career truly life. As the end of the first generation of Marvel Cinematic Universe films, the 3 hour duration of this film not only completes the world rescue mission that is displayed with a fiercely noisy uproar. This film is also a moment of celebration for the characters, the players, and also the creators behind the scenes who have presented the action of dozens of Marvel characters integrated through the title by changing the world box office map modifier for more than 10 years non-stop. And, the vibration from the spirit was felt when watching until it was over.
5. Parasite
dir. Bong Joon Ho
At first the film would be mistaken for one thing - an unemployed family taking care of a rich family to work, but the film skilfully brought the audience into unexpected turns, until finally it came to a complete picture of the unrest the creators were about to convey. Playing in the realm of dark comedy and thriller, driven by compact acting and rhythm control that causes excitement, this is one of the best specimens of films that have a loud message but at the same time provide entertainment.
4. Ad Astra
dir. James Gray
Presented as a sci-fi drama, it is difficult not to be fascinated by the imagination offered: time is not too far ahead if exploration and colonialization of space become plural, presented through exquisite visuals and, well, down to earth. What's more, this film succeeds in explaining a complex universe of stories, while at the same time telling a story about the relationship between father and son in the process of searching and reconciliation, in one fell swoop.
3. Ford v Ferrari
dir. James Mangold
Adapted from the true story of the first victory of the US car company, Ford at the annual racing event 24 Hours of Le Mans in 1966, the outline is the efforts of people who had not been calculated to prove the ability to reach the top. However, not the glorification of success takes precedence. The film weaves the story behind the scenes, specifically the friendship of Caroll Shelby and racer Ken Miles and his family, in warm and humane speech. But do not miss, the arrangement of vintage racing scenes is also lauched optimally, to make it forget that sometimes the real world is not as sweet as our expectations.
2. Shazam!
dir. David F. Sandberg
Appearing carefree as the most "loose" entry in the DC superhero universe, this film sticks out with its simple and fun premise, served in a solid comedy action package. Not only taking the path of a good superhero versus a villain as usual - with a thrilling set of cool visuals relying on CGI, the life of this film also lies in the story of friendship and kinship, so easy to hit and not too complicated reason. In addition, the comedy shows appear organic and synergize with the story, even in the final battle. A complete entertainment package, one thing that might be difficult to pin on DC films in previous years.
1. Joker
dir. Todd Phillips
Watching the Joker is one of the most "other" experiences of 2019. Adapting the main villain in the Batman story, this film is completely the opposite of the superhero film ever, inviting to experience the life of someone who later became a big villain. Apart from premium technical quality, minimal effect and praiseworthy acting performance, the narrative is so cheesy and not difficult to understand, but that's where the "problem" is, as if poking the audience's darkest side, which morally shouldn't sympathize with Arthur Fleck and his choices --in the middle of a dilapidated world, someone should be able to continue to choose kindness, but Arthur does not. As a result, for me, the Joker is a crime drama so gripping and so dark that it is difficult to get rid of it from memory. A stand-out indeed.
And so my notes and annual list for 2019. I hope 2020 will be a more exciting year. See you around!
